Rooney played the full 90 minutes, picking up a yellow card against Chelsea who were in their first game under Avram Grant’s management. Rooney had an exellent chance early on, but cech was on form and made a stunning save to deny Rooney his first goal since coming back from his metatarsal injury.

Utd scored their first goal at the end of the first half, with a Carlos Tevez near post header. It was his first goal for the club.

Saha came on in the 2nd half and was brought down in the box late on. He converted the pentaly, sealing the 2-0 win at old Trafford.

The game was marred with a number of bad refereeing decisions, with Mikel Jon Obi harshly sent-off for a rash tackle on Patrice Evra late in the first half. United were also denied a pentaly early on.
